Building a More Connected System

of Maternal Mental Health Care

The Sacramento Maternal Mental Health Collaborative is focused on building a more coordinated and accessible system of care for families across the county. As part of this effort, we are conducting a landscape analysis to better understand the maternal mental health services available through Managed Care Plans (MCPs)—particularly in light of changes from CalAIM, Prop 1, and the increasing emphasis on enhanced care management and community supports.

Although many MCPs offer a wide range of services for pregnant and postpartum members, families and providers often face barriers in knowing how to access or navigate these supports, especially for those experiencing PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders). There's a recognized gap between what's available and what's actually being utilized.

By inviting MCPs to present at these meetings, we aim to:

  • Map out available services and pathways to care

  • Identify gaps, barriers, and opportunities for improvement

  • Co-create shared strategies to improve referrals, education, and utilization

  • Foster stronger cross-sector collaboration and coordination

This work is rooted in a community-wide vision: ensuring every birthing person in Sacramento County has timely, seamless access to the mental health care they need. The insights gathered will inform potential strategies and recommendations to bring to the Sacramento County Health Authority for future action.

Together, we can close the gaps, reduce confusion, and make maternal mental health care more effective and equitable.
